White Sox SP Brad Penny allows six runs vs. Dodgers
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/26/15) White Sox pitcher Brad Penny struggled in Thursday's spring loss to the Dodgers, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and three walks in four innings while striking out two.
"I went out there and I was kind of letting it go, throwing more than pitching," Penny said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I got behind. I was working on the cutter today, which I thought was better than it has been. So, just too many balls over the plate."
Penny is competing for a spot in the team's opening rotation while Chris Sale is sidelined. He's put together a 6.89 ERA in 15 2/3 innings this spring.
Carlos Rodon may not win spot in White Sox rotation
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/16/15) White Sox LHP Carlos Rodon , the third overall pick in last year's amateur draft, made his third start of the spring on Monday.
Rodon had a shaky first inning, giving up two runs on a hit, two walks and a hit batter. After allowing a hit to start the second inning, he retired the final six batters he faced, striking out three and lowering his spring ERA to 6.14. He threw 49 pitches, 28 of them strikes, in the outing.
Rodon took a rotation spot after Chris Sale went down with a foot injury in the spring. And, while Sale is expected to miss at least a few starts in the opening weeks of the season, Rodon may not be the one to fill the spot.
Veteran RHP Brad Penny , who has a 3.52 ERA this spring, may get the call instead, because the White Sox don't want to send Rodon back down after Sale returns to the rotation.
“The last thing you want is: bring him up when he’s not ready just to throw him into a game and send him back down,” manager Robin Ventura told JJ Stankevitz of CSN Chicago. “But a guy like him, he works so hard to get to this point, you don’t want it to be a short stint, you want him when he comes up he’s ready to go and you keep him there.”
“He’s a horse,” Ventura said. “He goes out there, he’s big and strong, there’s all those things that you like to see in a pitcher that he has.”
White Sox pitcher Brad Penny working to add cutter
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/14/15) White Sox pitcher Brad Penny has been working on adding a cutter for a while. But this year, Penny is giving it more focus, reports MLB.com.
"I've been asking for years just people who throw cutters how they hold it," said Penny, after allowing one run on five hits over 3 2/3 innings in a 7-6 victory. "Mariano [Rivera] showed me how he held it. And [Josh] Beckett started throwing one. Talked to him about it."
Penny may end up on the roster after being a non-roster invitee to camp, but he's not concerned with that yet.
"You have to go out and control what you can control," Penny said. "I don't make those decisions. I don't get paid to make those decisions. I just have to go out and pitch in whatever role. When I'm out there competing, give the team the best chance to win."
White Sox's Chris Sale given 'slim chance' to pitch Opening Day
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(3/1/15) White Sox manager Robin Ventura was not optimistic pitcher Chris Sale would be ready to pitch by Opening Day, reports ESPN.com.
“He was slated to go for Opening Day and there is a slim chance that he would be able to do that," Ventura said. "I would expect it not to be that way, but being that it's his ankle, we can treat that. It's not as though it’s his elbow where we would really be cautious."
Sale is recovering from a broken foot and if he is not ready by opening day, pitching coach Don Cooper said Brad Penny, Scott Carroll, Frankie Montas or Chris Beck would be given a chance to replace Sale.
"I think all of the guys that I've mentioned have a shot at making the rotation if [Sale] is not ready to go," Cooper said. "And then we'll make some adjustments to the schedule. Maybe it's me, but it feels like we've dealt with stuff like this before. That's OK, it is what it is. It sucks and I wish it didn't happen, but there are a lot of things people wish didn't happen. This is one with Chris and we'll deal with it."
White Sox pitcher Brad Penny hoping to start
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(2/23/15) White Sox pitcher Brad Penny is hoping to start again this season, according to CSN.
Penny signed a minor-league deal with the club during the offseason, and is hoping to make an impact in the rotation. After starting throughout most of his career, Penny has been used as a reliever in recent seasons. He wasn't a fan of the transition. "I never really felt good [as a reliever]," Penny said. "I’m better off as a starter. The older you get the harder it is to get loose. I need to know I’m starting at 7 o’clock."
The 36-year-old posted a 6.58 ERA over 26 innings last year.
