Donnelly hangs it up
(3/9/11) Relief pitcher Brendan Donnelly called it a career on Tuesday after he spent nine years in the majors. The right-handed reliever earned two World Series rings (with the Angels in 2002 and Boston in '07) during his career, which spanned almost two decades. "I'm pretty grateful for the career I've had," Donnelly told MLB.com. "I've done about everything in baseball that a player can do. I got to the big leagues, won World Series, made an All-Star team, and made a lot of friends along the way. He was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates last July 29 with a 5.58 ERA and 26 walks in 30 2/3 innings.

(7/29/10) The Pirates released reliever Brendan Donnelly on Thursday. He had been designated for assignment earlier last weekend.

Donnelly designated for assignment
(7/25/10) Pittsburgh designated veteran right-handed RP Brendan Donnelly for assignment on Sunday. Donnelly was 1-3 with a 5.58 ERA in 38 games and was about to start collecting on performance bonuses that would have paid him at least $150,000 for every five appearances. The 38-year-old was signed by the Pirates partly to help develop the staff's young relievers. No corresponding move was announced.

Donnelly comes up clutch for Pirates
(6/20/10) Pittsburgh RP Brendan Donnelly (3-1) retired three consecutive batters with runners on second and third in the eighth inning on Sunday en route to a 5-3 victory against Cleveland. Donnelly lowered his ERA to 5.40 and has not allowed a run in three consecutive appearances.

Donnelly getting stung by HRs
(6/13/10) Pittsburgh RP Brendan Donnelly has allowed five home runs in 18 2/3 innings this season. The latest one was to Detroit's Carlos Guillen, who hit the game-winning homer on Saturday. The veteran has allowed five total home runs only twice in his first eight seasons. "Mechanically, we're working on something, but it's not that big of a deal. I'm not making the pitch. I'm not getting the strikeout when I need to," Donnelly told MLB.com. "I'm not getting some luck when I need to. It's just a rough stretch. I've been there before, it's just a little more amplified here."
