Preseason Outlook

Teixeira didn't wither in the New York spotlight, nor did he ease up after signing a $180 million contract. Instead, he led the league in homers (39) and RBI (122) in his first year with the Yankees, earning MVP consideration for the first time in his career. He didn't start off so hot, hitting only .200 with three home runs, but once Alex Rodriguez returned from hip surgery in May, he caught fire, hitting .330 with 13 home runs for that month. The protection from A-Rod no doubt helped, but keep in mind Teixeira is normally a slow starter anyway. He's not going to bust out for 50 homers or contend for a batting title, but he's as safe a bet as any for a .300-30-100-100 line. That consistency makes him worth taking late in the first round, after other-worldly types like Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez and Chase Utley have gone off the board. He might not seem like an exciting pick since he plays such a deep position, but at least you know you can count on him for numbers. (Updated 12/9/09)
