|Jose Veras gets call from Astros |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(6/26/14) Right-hander Jose Veras required just 11 days and two innings pitched at Triple-A Oklahoma City to convince the Astros to promote him.
Veras, who was signed on June 15, hurled shutout ball on one hit while striking out four for the RedHawks. He had been released by the Cubs five days earlier after a horrible start to the season. Veras was 21 for 25 in save chances last year.

(6/15/14) The Astros have signed reliever Jose Veras to a minor-league deal.
Veras was released by the Cubs after posting an 8.10 ERA over 13 1/3 innings. He was a member of the Astros last season, but was traded near the deadline.

(6/10/14) The Cubs announced Tuesday they released former closer Jose Veras, who was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 12 relief appearances.
Veras, who was 0 for 2 in save opportunities, signed a one-year, $3.85 million contract in the offseason, which included a $5.5 million team option for 2014.

(5/21/14) Cubs reliever Jose Veras stumbled late in Wednesday's game against the Yankees, and it proved costly in a 4-2 loss.
Appearing in his third game since returning from the disabled list, Veras had trouble with the Yankees as he entered in the 13th inning. HE allowed three runs and a walk, with two runs coming across, including the winning run on a wild pitch.
Veras has struggled out of the bullpen for the Cubs this season, and now has a 12.96 ERA in 8 1/3 innings of work. Wednesday was his first loss.
Astros defeat Athletics on Hoes' home run in 12th
L.J. Hoes hit a home run with one out in the top of the 12th, and the Houston Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 on Tuesday night for their first victory in four tries at the Coliseum this year.
|Though the Astros didn't provide Jose Veras with many save opportunties last season, he made the most of the situation, at least until he was dealt to the Tigers in late July. Veras notched 19 saves in 22 attempts, and he also recorded 44 strikeouts with a 2.93 ERA over his 43 innings in an Astros uniform. He was less effective after moving on to Detroit, where he served in a setup role, but he still parlayed his effort into a one-year, $4 million deal with the Cubs for 2014. Veras is expected to serve as the Cubs' closer, but he should be a last resort for saves in Fantasy. Part of his success with the Astros was built on improved control, but late in the season, he reverted to his more typical wild ways. While Veras may pitch just well enough to keep the closer's job, the benefit of whatever saves he provides could be washed out by a high WHIP. Consider him only in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues.
