| Jose Veras picks up save |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/7/13) Astros closer Jose Veras earned his third save of the season on Tuesday night at home against the Angels. Veras went 1-2-3 in the ninth to close out a 7-6 win.
The Houston closer struck out a batter and needed 13 pitches. He's gone 3 for 5 in save situations and has allowed seven earned runs over 13 innings for an ERA of 4.85.
|
| The well-traveled Jose Veras joined his fifth team in four years, as he spent the 2012 season in the Brewers' bullpen. Veras had a typical season for him, racking up more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings, but also walking more than a batter every other inning. Used in middle relief and setup roles, Veras collected 10 holds, which was his lowest total in three years. One role the 32-year-old has seldom filled is the closer's role, as he has had just 17 save opportunities over the course of his seven-year career, but that is likely to change in 2013. The Astros signed Veras this offseason, and they intend to use him in the ninth inning. While Veras has the strikeout profile of a typical closer, he is a risk to your pitching staff's ERA and WHIP. He is mainly an option for owners in deeper mixed leagues and AL-only formats. (Updated 3/12/13) |
