Reds' Jumbo Diaz making case for eighth-inning role
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(4/11/15) Reds reliever Jumbo Diaz is making his case for the eighth-inning setup role ahead of closer Aroldis Chapman, pitching in the eighth inning in each of his team's first three games and delivering 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
"He is [making a good case]," Price said before Friday's game, per MLB.com, adding, "He had a really good slide. I felt like the way you can tell if a slider is a good pitch is by the reaction of the hitter. ... You see (Andrew) McCutchen and some of those guys in there, that were in front of a slider and that comes down to pitch recognition and not being able to identify the pitch until you've made a swing commitment to the ball. I was very impressed with the way he threw. He seems to be built for these late-game situations. This year more than last, he'll have some of those opportunities."
Diaz made 37 appearances for the Reds in 2014, posting a 3.38 ERA and 37:14 K:BB ratio in 34 2/3 innings.
Reds' Price might take Kevin Gregg out of eighth-inning role
|by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com|
|(4/8/15) After a rough outing for Reds pitcher Kevin Gregg on Monday, manager Bryan Price was asked if Gregg would be the guy in the eighth inning going forward.
“He may be. He may not be,” Price replied. “It just depends on who I have healthy and who is down there. He’s a guy who is experienced as a closer, a setup man and a starter. He’s a guy who has been a lot tighter situations than that over the course of his career. As I’ve told you, the bullpen will be ever evolving. These guys will cut out their roles based on how they perform,” per mlblogs.com.
Price acknowldeged that some adjustments will have to be made in the bullpen.
“Once the eighth inning becomes a situational inning, it becomes a challenge,” Price said. “We went into that game anticipating him pitching the eighth inning. It didn’t go as well as we had anticipated. The eighth inning isn’t really a matchup inning. We really had hoped that it would be a clean inning and it wasn’t, so I had to make some adjustments there.”
Price added that pitchers Jumbo Diaz and Tony Cingrani could be in the late-inning mix.
Reds reliever Jumbo Diaz fighting to be member of bullpen
|by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com|
|(3/14/15) Reds reliever Jumbo Diaz wants to make the Reds' squad out of camp this year, per MLB.com.
"I have to come in this year with the same hunger from last year," Diaz said. "They're giving me an opportunity and I will try to do my best to fight for that spot in the bullpen."
Diaz, 31, is considered to be right in the mix when it comes to the Reds' bullpen search, according to Reds manager Bryan Price.
"We're counting on him," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Again, there are no freebies here. We still need guys to come in and they have to look ready to help us in Spring Training."
