Like many players before him, Gonzalez did his best work in his age-27 season, hitting a career-high 40 home runs. Scary thought, but if not for a rough stretch in June and July when he hit .215, his stats would look even more impressive. He hit .311 with a 1.018 OPS in the second half, just to give you some idea of his potential. But as you soak in those numbers, don't lose sight of the area in which Gonzalez showed the most improvement: his plate discipline. He led all of baseball in walks with 119, upping his previous career high by more than 50 percent, and cut down his strikeouts from 142 to 109. Basically, he went from striking out twice as often as he walked to walking more than he strikes out. That's maturity, and his OPS shows it, rising from .871 in 2008 to .958 last year. Clearly, Gonzalez joined the ranks of the elite last year and now rates closer to Mark Teixeira than Derrek Lee. And considering he hit only .244 with 12 home runs at oversized PETCO Park, just imagine if he gets traded. (Updated 12/9/09)
