Preseason Outlook

Jenks undergoes second back surgery: The Boston Globe reports Red Sox RP Bobby Jenks needed a second spinal decompression procedure since he was experiencing discomfort following his first back surgery in mid-December. One major league source told the paper that Jenks is now unlikely to be ready for the start of spring training. (Updated 01/05/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Jenks needed a second surgery because more fragments were discovered pressing against a nerve in his back following the first surgery to remove fragments. The normal recovery time for the procedure is eight weeks. Jenks still has time to get ready for the start of the season, but the acquisitions of Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey likely means Jenks is headed for at best a setup role once active. He will remain just an AL-only Fantasy RP. (Updated 01/05/2012).
