Preseason Outlook

Morneau often gets lumped in with the elite first basemen in Fantasy, but in reality, he's probably a step behind them. He typically slows down in the second half, hitting only .201 with nine home runs after the All-Star break last year, and has only once finished with an OPS over .900 -- not surprisingly, the year he won the AL MVP (2006). Just to give you a comparison, 15 players eligible at first base topped that .900 mark last year. Of course, Morneau never had to worry about injuries, which often made his totals better than his percentages, but all that changed last year when a stress fracture in his lower back ended his season in early September. But for all those shortcomings, he's still a huge asset in Fantasy, rarely striking out for a power hitter and routinely driving in 100 runs in the middle of the Twins lineup. He's a safe bet to hit .290 with right around 30 homers. Frontloaded or not, that's useful production. Just don't make the mistake of reaching for him too early. (Updated 12/9/09)
