| David Ross might be back this weekend |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/22/13) Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday he's hopeful backup catcher David Ross (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland Thursday, according to WEEI.com.
“David Ross, we’re hopeful he will be in Portland (Thursday) to get some at-bats," Farrell said. "We’ll just have to go through the normal protocol with MLB when it comes to concussions. So there’s some lengthy paperwork as you might expect to get that taken care of. But we’re hopeful that he’ll be back for us during the Cleveland series (May 23-26)."

It was thought previously that Ross may not need rehab games, though that appears not to be the case now.

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/20/13) The Red Sox examined catcher David Ross in Boston Monday and it was determined that he has been cleared to resume throwing and hitting off a tee, the Boston Herald reports.
Ross (concussion) may not even need a minor league rehab assignment. He could be activated by Thursday if that is the case.

| David Ross to be re-examined Monday |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/17/13) Red Sox catcher David Ross, on the 7-day disabled list, did not travel with the team to Minnesota as he continues to experience concussion-like symptoms.
Ross will not be ready to return from the DL on Sunday. Instead, he is scheduled to be re-examined Monday in Boston, according to MassLive.com.

| After four years of impressive slugging percentages during 150-at-bat stints as the backup to Brian McCann in Atlanta, David Ross moves on to Boston in 2013, where he may have an even harder time securing regular at-bats. Not only does he have to contend with last year's starter, another former backup to McCann in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but he also has to watch out for up-and-comer Ryan Lavarnway and (perhaps) free agent signee Mike Napoli. Of those, Ross figures to be the one most often replacing Saltalamacchia behind the plate, but what good will another 150 at-bats do him? He has pop, but Ross is no more than a late-round pick in AL-only leagues that require the use of two catchers. (Updated 1/8/13) |
