Sanchez ready to throw to bases: The San Jose Mercury News reports Giants 2B Freddy Sanchez is making steady progress with his surgically-repaired right shoulder. After two months of playing catcher, Sanchez will start making throws to bases next week. Trainer Dave Groeschner added that Sanchez has built up arm strength while stretching his throwing sessions to 105 feet. (Updated 01/24/2012)

Shoulder - Questionable for start of spring training (Updated - 1/4/12)
Fantasy Analysis
Sanchez is getting close to a critical point in his recovery. Throwing has been his biggest hurdle, so if he can continue to make progress without any setbacks, then the Giants will be very pleased. But it's clear the Giants won't rush Sanchez, who might not be ready for the start of spring training. Sanchez will be the team's starting 2B once he returns, but he is shaping up to be an injury-risk, late-round Fantasy flier on Draft Day. (Updated 01/24/2012).

Aside from his 2006 campaign in which he won the NL batting title, Freddy Sanchez has settled into a remarkably consistent, if unexciting, pattern. He routinely hits around .290 with some doubles power, but he walks infrequently. Over the last three years, injuries have also been a part of Sanchez's formula, and he missed more than half of the 2011 season with a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery. Sanchez is expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training, when he will re-assume the role of starting second baseman. Even if he can remain healthy for a whole season, Sanchez is really only helpful in Fantasy for batting average and runs scored, and even in those categories, he is not a top producer. He is mainly an option for owners in NL-only leagues, though he could be worth a late-round pick in deeper mixed leagues as well. (Updated 1/5/12)
