Astros activate P Josh Fields, option IF Jonathan Villar
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(4/23/15) The Astros announced that they have activated reliever Josh Fields from the disabled list.
Fields has been on the 15-day disabled list with a groin injury. He's been with Triple-A Fresno and threw five times on a rehab assignment. Fields allowed two runs on five hits and four walks in six innings pitched. He's struck out three batters.
"Josh Fields is a real weapon in the 'pen anytime during the game," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said, per MLB.com. "I told him, he'll be used primarily as a bridge in the middle part of the game. Get a couple outings under his belt, we can move him into a number of roles."
To make room for Fields, the Astros optioned infielder Jonathan Villar to Fresno. In seven games played, Villar has only recorded one hit in 13 at-bats.
Astros' Jonathan Villar frustrated by errors
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4/14/15) After committing 16 errors each of the last two years, Astros infielder Jonathan Villar made a goal for himself this year. "My goal was to not make an error this year at any position," he said, per the Houston Chronicle. "As you saw, I didn’t make an error all of spring training."
That goal went up in smoke on the first ball hit to Villar in Monday's game. Villar was charged with a pair of errors--fielding and throwing--on the grounder to short.
"I feel stupid," he said.
"The first ball of the game … I’m not sure what happened," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He just misplayed it. I know he has a history of a couple rough plays like that that he’s trying to overcome that part of his game. But he’s played very well defensively in the time I’ve seen him play here through spring training and into the early parts of the season. He had some great plays at third base the other day. The first one was a fluke. The second error I think he was a little unlucky."
Jake Marisnick, Jonathan Villar, Will Harris crack Astros' roster
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/1/15) Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick, utility man Jonathan Villar and pitcher Will Harris have all been informed they will break camp with the big-league club, according to the Houston Chronicle.
It will be the first time Marisnick has cracked the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old hit .306/.395/.500 this spring and is a candidate to play regularly at center field.
"It's going to feel like Christmas," Marisnick said.
Villar, 23, batted .209 during his second season in the majors in 2014. This spring, he slashed .256/.356/.436 over 39 at-bats.
"He's made some of the most spectacular plays of the spring, both in the outfield and in the infield," general manager Jeff Luhnow said of Villar. "It's a great story."
Harris, 30, will join Houston's bullpen this season after posting a 4.34 ERA last season with the Diamondbacks. He registered a 2.45 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB ratio over 11 innings this spring.
|2014 summary: Jonathan Villar began the season as the Astros' everyday shortstop, and through the first his first 42 games, he provided Fantasy owners with a combination of power and speed. After batting .233 with five home runs and 11 stolen bases through that initial stretch, Villar slumped badly with a .152 batting average, one home run and three steals over his next 29 games. The downturn earned Villar a ticket to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and that's where he stayed until major league rosters expanded in September. Villar's final stat line included a .209 batting average, seven home runs and 17 stolen bases.|
Playing time status: With the arrival of free agent Jed Lowrie, Villar is likely blocked from having a meaningful role this season. He will no longer be the bridge to top shortstop prospect Carlos Correa.
2015 outlook: Should Villar be needed as an injury replacement, he could be a decent short-term source of steals in deeper leagues. That's the extent of his value for this year, so he can be ignored in virtually all drafts.
