Preseason Outlook

Atkins' steady decline from his breakout 2006, when he hit .329 with 29 home runs and 120 RBI, become not so steady last year, dropping him off a cliff and out of the starting lineup. He hit .247 in April and only got worse from there, hitting .148 in May before surrendering his starting job to up-and-comer Ian Stewart. He still got occasional starts, mostly against left-handers, but never enough to salvage his batting average, which ended the year at .226. He had always outperformed his pedigree, especially in 2006, but last year was too much of a course correction. He simply can't be that bad, especially since he seemed to reverse the trend of his vanishing plate discipline, walking 41 times in 354 at-bats after walking 40 times in 611 at-bats in 2008. The Orioles didn't think so either, signing him in the offseason to take over as their starting first baseman. You shouldn't expect any All-Star appearances for Atkins, but he's worth drafting as a late-round sleeper. (Updated 1/24/10)
