|Orioles announce several roster moves |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(9/1/14) The Orioles announced a slew of roster moves on Monday. They have recalled right-hander Evan Meek from Triple-A Norfolk and right-hander Kevin Gausman from the GCL Orioles. Additionally, the team also selected the contract of left-hander Joe Saunders from Triple-A Norfolk. Infielder Kelly Johnson has reported to the club after being traded over the weekend.
|Red Sox place Kelly Johnson, Craig Breslow on trade waivers |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(8/8/14) The Red Sox placed infielder Kelly Johnson and pitcher Craig Breslow on revocable trade waivers Friday, the Boston Globe reports.
The pair are the first Red Sox players to hit revocable waivers this August, but as many players are tossed on trade waivers in August, the move doesn't necessarily mean either is in the works to be traded.
|Red Sox demote Mookie Betts, activate Kelly Johnson |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(8/7/14) John Farrell claimed he wanted to get at-bats for rookie Mookie Betts. Those at-bats for Betts will be coming for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Betts was demoted by the Red Sox on Thursday to make room for Kelly Johnson, who was activated off the disabled list. He had been out since July 22 with a groin injury.
|Kelly Johnson activated, not in lineup Thursday |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(8/7/14) The Red Sox activated infielder Kelly Johnson from the disabled list as expected Thursday, ahead of the team's game against the Cardinals.
He is not in the starting lineup Thursday, and it is unclear when he is expected to make his Red Sox debut. Johnson has been out since July 22 due to a groin injury, and was traded to the Red Sox during his time on the DL.
|Kelly Johnson's final stat line in 2013 -- a .235 average with 16 home runs, 12 doubles, and seven steals -- doesn't tell the entire story. At the end of May, Johnson was hitting .287 with 10 home runs, five steals, and six doubles, in 157 at-bats. From June forward, Johnson had a .196 average, with six home runs, six doubles, and two steals in 209 at-bats. The early-season fervor over Johnson made him a great sell-high candidate, and the spoils of a player who hit .235 on the season could have been huge, if parlayed correctly. Heading into 2014, Johnson has second base and outfield eligibility in plenty of leagues, but his role with the Yankees -- especially in light of the Brian Roberts signing -- is a bit unclear. He showed off some nice potential last season (the move to a cozier Yankee Stadium will help), but Johnson probably needs a lengthy A-Rod suspension or Roberts injury to hit the 400-at-bat mark. His multi-position eligibility gives him a nice boost, but Johnson is best left to the deeper rosters of Roto leagues on Draft Day.
