Mateo guilty of spousal abuse
(12/18/07) Former Mariners reliever Julio Mateo pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of beating his wife in a Manhattan hotel. The 30-year-old player pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and disorderly conduct, admitting he hit Santa Martina Sanchez on May 5, 2007. In exchange for the plea, Mateo was spared jail and sentenced to a domestic abuse program. Mateo's wife told police the pitcher punched her in the eye, choked her and bit her lip, causing a large cut that required at least five stitches, according to a criminal complaint. Criminal Court Judge Larry Stephen told Mateo that if he completes the domestic abuse program, he will be allowed to withdraw the assault plea and only the disorderly conduct plea will remain. Mateo's lawyer, James Koenig, said the program most likely will last a few months. If Mateo fails to complete it, he could be sentenced to a year in jail.
RP Mateo released by Phillies
(12/5/07) The Phillies released RHP Julio Mateo on Wednesday.
Julio Mateo joins Phillies
(7/31/07) The Phillies acquired reliever Julio Mateo from Seattle, adding bullpen depth shortly before Tuesday's deadline for making trades without waivers. Mateo hasn't pitched in the major leagues since early May. The right-hander was suspended by the Mariners after his May 5 arrest for allegedly assaulting his wife at a Manhattan hotel. The Phillies sent infielder Jesus Merchan from Double-A Reading to Seattle for Mateo, who was 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in nine appearances this season. Mateo will be assigned to Triple-A Ottawa, though he could end up with the Phillies quickly. He pitched well for Seattle the first month before he had more troubles. After Mateo's arrest, the Mariners demoted him to Triple-A and then suspended him for 10 days without pay. He underwent counseling before returning to the mound.
M's to activate Mateo on Friday
(5/23/07) Mariners RP Julio Mateo, who was arrested and charged with assault earlier this month after a dispute with his wife, will be activated from the Triple-A inactive list Friday. Mateo will report to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday and will be available to pitch Friday. He pitched simulated games Monday and Wednesday at the Mariners' spring training complex in Arizona.
Union goes to bat for Mateo
(5/17/07) The baseball players' association filed grievances Thursday over the suspensions of Seattle Mariners pitcher Julio Mateo and Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Alberto Callaspo. The union's grievance on behalf of Mateo also claims the Mariners improperly optioned him to the minor leagues. Mateo was arrested in New York following a dispute at a Manhattan hotel on May 5 involving a woman police said was his wife. He was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault, posted bond and was released. Police said his wife needed five stitches to her mouth. Under baseball's new labor agreement, grievances are to be heard within a year of being filed.
