Preseason Outlook

Diaz got regular playing time down the stretch last year, and he responded well to it, hitting .339 with nine home runs in August and September. For the season, he set career highs in OPS (.878) and four of five Rotisserie categories, seeming to progress with increased exposure when so many part-timers regress. Unfortunately, he once again did most of his damage against left-handers, hitting .412 with a 1.104 OPS, which is why you have to think he'll go back to a platoon role this season, splitting time with Melky Cabrera. If, however, the Braves decide 20-year-old prospect Jason Heyward isn't ready coming out of spring training, Diaz will have an everyday job, making him worth a look in mixed leagues even if he doesn't have the upside for more than 20 homers or so. He's just an NL-only option otherwise, though one whose value could quickly rise with an injury. (Updated 1/19/10)
