Preseason Outlook

Rios got off to his familiar bad start in 2009 -- only this time, he never turned it around. Even a midseason trade to the White Sox couldn't spark him to life. He actually got worse in Chicago, hitting .199 in 146 at-bats. At age 29, now six years into his major-league career, Rios faces an identity crisis. He has only one 20-homer season. He has only one 30-steal season. He had looked like a safe bet for a good batting average, but then he hit .247 last year. When assessing Rios in Fantasy, you pretty much have to go back to square one. He's not a .691 OPS type player, so you have to figure he'll improve on last year's mark, but he's not a 30-30 player either. Even a 20-20 season seems like a long shot. If you want to draft Rios, you should wait until the middle rounds and expect no more 15 homers and 20 steals. If he finally reaches his potential and exceeds those numbers, great, but if not, you won't have to endure another season of disappointment. (Updated 1/18/10)
