Preseason Outlook

Famed pitching coach Dave Duncan gave everyone the impression he had made something out of nothing when Wellemeyer, a converted middle reliever, won 13 games for the Cardinals in 2009. But the mirage didn't last, and Wellemeyer looked every bit like an out-of-place middle reliever last year, posting a 5.89 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. Now without Duncan, he might be better off as a middle reliever. Some elbow inflammation might have played a part in his struggles, but that's not reason enough to gamble on him in 2010.
