Preseason Outlook

Matsui bounced back from a fairly serious knee injury in 2008 to have one of the best seasons of his career, even capturing the World Series MVP. In fact, he would have set career highs with his 28 homers and .509 slugging percentage if not for his terrific 2004. The Yankees took a cautious approach with him as first, but by the second half, he was playing more or less every day, hitting .296 with 18 home runs over the season's final three months. And make no mistake: The Angels signed him to play every day, leaving him at DH so he can avoid unnecessary wear and tear on his surgically repaired knees. His near 1-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio should help him avoid slumps and keep him from losing unnecessary points in Head-to-Head leagues, and he's still a threat for 100 RBI batting in the middle of the lineup. And just in case you want to argue Yankee Stadium aided his resurgence last year, keep in mind he hit 15 of his 28 homers on the road. Matsui remains an injury risk at his age, but he clearly has value as a middle-round pick. (Updated 1/19/10)
