Preseason Outlook

If anyone ever fit the description of a second-half player, it's LaRoche. He stated his candidacy loud and clear during a season in which he changed addresses twice. For the Pirates, he was a free-swinger with a relatively low success rate, hitting .247 with 12 home runs. For the Red Sox, he didn't even get a chance, playing a reserve role for a week before moving on to the Braves. Only then did his transformation take place. He hit .325 with 12 homers and a .957 OPS in 212 at-bats, rewarding the most patient of Fantasy owners and almost single-handedly getting the Braves back in the playoff race. Yet for all the excitement, his numbers finished right at his career norms, suggesting you shouldn't view his second-half explosion as any sort of progression or breakout. He simply got hot, as he has in the second half almost every year of his career. So if you need 25 homers and 80-plus RBI late, LaRoche, now with the Diamondbacks, will give them to you.
