Preseason Outlook

In two full big-league seasons, Loney hasn't been able to repeat the 15 homers he hit in half a season as a rookie back in 2007, validating some of the doubts scouts had about his power potential. Unfortunately, he hasn't emerged as a .300 hitter either, though his low strikeout rate suggests he should become one in the future. He didn't show much improvement over the course of the year, but you still shouldn't write off an eventual breakout for the 25-year-old, especially given his big 6-foot-3 frame. Maybe he just needs to get out of Dodger Stadium; he hit 12 of his 13 home runs on the road. If nothing else, you can count on Loney to provide decent RBI totals batting in the middle of a better-than-average Dodgers lineup. He's a good choice as a late-round corner infielder since he has nothing but upside at this stage of his career. (Updated 12/9/09)
