| Kevin Youkilis out 10-12 weeks |

(6/18/13) Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis will have surgery for a herniated disc in his back, and will miss 10 to 12 weeks, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Youkilis has not played since June 13, and was initially placed on the disabled list with a lumbar strain. He is hitting .219/.305/.343 in 105 at-bats. He'll have surgery Thursday.

(6/17/13) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed concern Monday when talking about Kevin Youkilis' back injury.
"Back issues usually don’t get better," Cashman said, per The Journal News.
Youkilis has been sidelined for all but 28 games this season because of his back injury. Cashman added the Yankees went ahead and signed Youkilis this offseason because he passed his physical with flying colors and "comfort level knowing the White Sox offered him a two-year deal and that’s where he just came from."

(6/14/13) The Yankees announced Friday that third baseman Kevin Youkilis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lumbar strain.
Youkilis, who has hit .219/.305/.343 with two home runs in 105 at-bats, missed 30 games with back issues earlier this season, returning May 31. He played 11 of his team's 13 games before returning to the disabled list this time around.

(6/12/13) Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis (back) returned after missing one game Tuesday during a loss at Oakland.
Youkilis' back issue was never considered serious and he had no issues during the game. Batting fifth, Youkilis went 1 for 4 with a single and is batting .240.
Youkilis has seen a drop in average since coming off the disabled list in late May and the back issue is likely not helping.

(6/11/13) Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis (back) was back in the lineup Tuesday at Oakland. Youkilis took Sunday off with a stiff back and also didn't play on Monday's scheduled off day.
Youkilis has played seven games in June and has gone 4 for 24 (.167) with no RBI and seven strikeouts.

| Kevin Youkilis had a nightmare of a season between Boston and the Chicago White Sox in 2012, hitting a career-low .235 with just 15 doubles and 60 RBI in 122 games. His .745 OPS and .336 OBP were also the lowest of his career. Youkilis was pushed out of his third base job in Boston, traded to Chicago and never dug himself out of a season-long rut, complicated by nagging injuries to his knee, toe, rib and back. It was the second straight season Youkilis saw injuries accompanied with a dip in production. But he will be motivated in 2013, playing for his one-time rival, the Yankees, and hitting in a comfortable stadium with power bats behind him. From 2008 to 2010, Youkilis batted .300 or above. He's hit as many as 29 home runs in a season and has twice gone over 40 doubles. The skill is there, but Youkilis, turning 34 this season, hasn't played 125 games since 2009 and has never played 150 games in any season during his career. A high-risk, high-reward play, Youkilis -- who is eligible at both first base and third base this season -- could see his average rise back to the .300 level and is a good bet for at least 23-25 home runs. He makes for a nice middle round selection in most formats. (Updated 1/2/13) |
