(11/6/13) In addition to second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder Curtis Granderson and starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, who were extended qualifying offers, and starting pitcher Phil Hughes, who was not, the Yankees have had several players file for free agency, including starting pitcher Andy Pettitte, designated hitter Travis Hafner, shortstop Brendan Ryan, third baseman Kevin Youkilis, relief pitcher Boone Logan, first baseman Lyle Overbay, relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain and first baseman Mark Reynolds. Pettitte is expected to retire.
|Kevin Youkilis a healthy free agent |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(10/28/13) Kevin Youkilis missed most of last season with the Yankees due to back surgery, but the third baseman/first baseman is healthy as he enters free agency, according to his agent, the New York Daily News reports Monday.
"He’s fine," said Joe Bick, Youkilis’ representative. "Had the Yankees made it to the postseason, there’s a pretty good chance he would’ve been ready to play. He shouldn’t have any issues whatsoever going forward. It’s a normal off-season; just try to figure out where he’s playing."
The 34-year-old Youkilis played in just 28 games last season and hit .219 with two homers and eight RBI. He will be 35 prior to spring training.
|Kevin Youkilis heads to Japan after another injury-marred season. In 2013, Youkilis hit .219 over 105 at-bats, with two home runs eight walks. He hasn't hit over .258 since 2010, and he last eclipsed 20 home runs in 2009. The one-year (assumed) break from the majors may be just what Youkilis needs to clear his head and re-establish value away from the major media markets of Boston, New York, and Chicago -- his stops throughout his career. While he has no 2014 value, very deep dynasty leaguers may want to take a shot on him, as Youkilis could return in 2015 with a new focus and something to prove.
