Preseason Outlook

DeJesus avoided injury in 2009, his only extended absence resulting from an illness at the end of the season. His good health allowed him to top 500 at-bats for the third straight season and hit a career-high 13 home runs. Then again, 13 homers is nothing to write home about, especially for a player who doesn't steal bases and has only once hit over .300. Now 30, DeJesus always seems capable of delivering more than he actually does. The problem is he doesn't excel in any one category. He won't win a batting title and is no threat for 20 homers, but he gets enough extra-base hits to approach an .800 OPS. He's kind of the next Mark Kotsay, which has value in Fantasy, but more as a midseason waiver claim than a staple of your team. (Updated 1/19/10)
