Preseason Outlook

The Angels never aim to have Izturis in their starting lineup, yet somehow he always ends up there. It took an injury and eventual demotion for Howie Kendrick last year, but Izturis got a career-high 387 at-bats. The results were encouraging. He hit .300 with enough extra-base pop to slug .434. He also stole 13 bases. He played so well the Angels tried to keep him in the starting lineup even after Kendrick returned, making him the better half of a lefty-righty platoon with Kendrick. In the end, Kendrick's potential won out, which again puts Izturis in the position of ultimate backup plan this season. You wouldn't want to draft him in mixed leagues, but he deserves a roster spot in AL-only leagues based on the probability he fills in again. (Updated 1/5/10)
