(5/5/13) Tigers catcher Brayan Pena belted his first home run of the year Sunday against the Astros. Pena, who was made his eighth start behind the plate, belted the two-run shot in the second inning off starter Philip Humber.
That would be his only hit in the 9-0 win as he finished 1 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Pena is batting .211/.231/.316 with one home run and four RBI over 38 at-bats.
|Brayan Pena would welcome catcher protection|
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(4/20/13) Tigers catcher Brayan Pena is no stranger to home plate collisions, but that does not mean he thinks they shouldn't be addressed. Pena, who has suffered concussion symptoms in his career, told MLB.com Friday that he's in favor of proposed rule changes that would protect catchers on plays at the plate.
"Imagine us. We have to stand there and we have to take the hit when the guy's coming at full speed -- a 200-pound, 230-pound guy coming at you, and you have to stay there and take the hit," he said. "So I think for the health issue, [a rule change] would be great. But at the same time, I feel like it's part of the game. It's part of the game that I chose. It's part of the position that I chose to play."
Pena, who spent time on the DL in 2008 with post-concussion symptoms, has not played since a collision Wednesday against the Mariners. Fortunately, he has not had any concussion symptoms.
"As a baseball fan, you don't want to change the game that much," Pena said. "But if you look at it from a family's standpoint, you want to see your boys grow up. At the end of your career, if you can say, 'I retired because it was time for me to go' not because concussions forced me to go."
|Tigers land backup in Pena|
|by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(12/10/12) The Tigers signed free agent catcher Brayan Pena to a one-year deal Monday. He is expected to serve as Alex Avila's backup in 2013. Pena hit .236 with a .583 OPS in 212 at-bats for the Royals in 2012.
|Brayan Pena's four-year tenure with the Royals came to an end this offseason, as he signed with the Tigers to be Alex Avila's backup. In his first season in Kansas City, Pena showed some promise, as he batted .273 with six home runs in just 165 at-bats. Pena's playing time has increased somewhat over the last two seasons, but his production didn't. With batting averages under .250 in both 2011 and 2012 and little extra-base power, Pena figures to be little more than AL-only filler in 2013. (Updated 1/4/13)|
