Report: Rangers catching job is Robinson Chirinos's to lose
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/10/15) Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos is heading into spring training as the clear favorite to start at catcher for the team, MLB.com reports.
Chirinos appears to not be facing strong competition at the position this spring.
"That means a lot," Chirinos said. "I finally have the opportunity for more responsibility. Now I need to prepare more and help my pitchers any way I can. I need to be ready because this is something I wanted to do."
Chirinos was considered Triple-A depth heading into spring training last year but eventually played his way into the No. 1 role. He finished with a .239/.290/.415 line with 13 home runs and 40 RBI in 306 at-bats.

Chirinos has appeared in 126 MLB games, starting 110. He hit .239 with 13 home runs, 15 doubles and 40 RBI in 93 games for Texas in 2014.

2015 Draft Prep: Busts 2.0
Now that spring training is in full effect, that means we're deep into draft season. Our Scott White takes a look at the latest average draft position data to make some changes to his busts list.
|2014 summary: Robinson Chirinos, heretofore a third-catcher type with the Rays, got a chance to be the Rangers' primary catcher last year and was surprisingly productive, hitting 13 home runs in 306 at-bats. Of course, he ranked only 27th among catchers in Head-to-Head leagues and 23rd in Rotisserie, but he was serviceable off the waiver wire in two-catcher leagues.|
Playing time status: Last year, Chirinos fell into the starting role when Geovany Soto went down early with a knee injury and J.P. Arencibia sank further into ineptitude, but he'll be starting by design this year, which should mean 400-plus at-bats. The Rangers do have one of the game's best catching prospects in Jorge Alfaro, but he's at least another year away.
2015 outlook: Offensively, Chirinos' only real skill is power, and even that's just moderate. Not every catcher will hit double-digit home runs, though, so in Rotisserie leagues, he has low-end appeal. Still, you can probably leave him for AL-only formats on Draft Day.
