Fantasy Analysis
Theriot could challenge Brandon Crawford for the starting shortstop job this spring. He is still an excellent contact hitter, but he has very little power and has diminished as a stolen base threat. Should he find regular playing time, he could help owners in NL-only leagues. (Updated 01/27/2012).

Former All-Star pitchers Joe Saunders and Hong-Chih Kuo, and Baltimore outfielder Luke Scott became free agents Tuesday after their teams declined to offer 2012 contracts.
12/13/2011 13:32 Cards sign Schumaker to two-year deal, cut Theriot
Second baseman Skip Schumaker has agreed to a $3 million, two-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, who did not tender a contract offer to infielder Ryan Theriot before Monday night's deadline.
Ryan Theriot had served as the Cardinals' starting shortstop for the first four months of last season, but when he failed to offer much offensively or defensively, the team acquired Rafael Furcal from the Dodgers at the trade deadline. That moved Theriot into a utility role, and he will likely play that same role this year now that he is with the Giants. The good news for Theriot is that he will sit behind unproven Brandon Crawford on the depth chart, and an extended slump from the young shortstop might just be enough to thrust Theriot back into a starting role. However, even if Theriot gets back to playing every day, he does little to help Fantasy owners other than to rack up singles. Only owners in NL-only leagues should bother with Theriot on Draft Day.
