Preseason Outlook

Gutierrez joined Seattle in 2009 and got to do something he never had a chance to do in Cleveland: play every day. He didn't just play against left-handers, and he didn't just play when another outfielder needed a day off. He was the center fielder, period. And instead of wilting under the pressure of everyday at-bats, he became everything the Indians doubted he would be, setting career highs in just about every category, most notably batting average (.283), home runs (18) and stolen bases (16). He had a terrible 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio -- something that might put an upper limit on his numbers going forward -- but at age 27, he's clearly a player on the rise. He might even go 20-20 this season. Again, don't expect stud numbers, but Gutierrez is a nice little bargain with a middle-to-late round pick. (Updated 1/18/10)
