(1/24/13) Free agent first baseman Dan Johnson signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees worth up to $900,000 if he makes the team Thursday. Johnson spent the 2012 season with the White Sox, racking up just 31 plate appearances.

Orioles win games, lose players -- and every day, remind us more of the 2008 Rays
The Orioles won another game Tuesday, moving back into a first-place tie with the Yankees for the fourth time in a week. They also lost another key player, for the second time in four days. The more they win, the more they surprise us, and even the more they suffer seemingly key injuries, the Orioles remind us of the 2008 Rays.

Tigers sweep ChiSox, share division lead
Justin Verlander shut down Chicago after the first inning and Delmon Young hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth Sunday night to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the White Sox and a share of first place in the AL Central.

| Dan Johnson can hit for power, and has some promise with average, but, at 33 years old, he has carved a niche for himself as a late-season call-up who will hammer home runs in high-pressure situations, and then not be heard from until the following August. He's not draft-able, but remember Johnson when September rolls around, as he's always good for some nice power surges at the end of the season. (Updated 1/8/13) |
