Preseason Outlook

Kubel took a huge step forward in his age-27 season last year, hitting .300 with 28 home runs and 103 RBI -- all career highs. His OPS rose by more than 100 points from 2008, his .907 mark placing him higher than such notables as Chase Utley, Evan Longoria and Mark Reynolds. Safe to say that his knee problems from earlier in his career aren't such a hindrance anymore. He finally overcame them to become what he should have become all along: a solid, professional hitter, the kind who contributes both average and power. And batting in front of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, you know he'll get his RBI. His biggest concern is his team's tendency to sit him against left-handers, which is reasonable considering he had a .644 OPS against them compared to a 1.013 mark against righties. Those dramatic splits and the potential for the Twins to act on them make him something like a No. 3 outfielder on Draft Day -- one you might want to sit during lefty-loaded weeks -- but with some improvement in that area, he could emerge as a No. 1.
