Fantasy Analysis
Gomes is now inserted into Oakland's OF/DH mix, though he could continue to fill the reserve role that he filled during his brief time in Washington. His extreme flyball-hitting ways may not mesh well with Oakland's spacious stadium, so even as a regular, Gomes has little appeal for mixed league owners. However, he will be a viable late-round option for owners in AL-only leagues. (Updated 01/20/2012).
09/03/2011 22:46 Nats score twice in ninth to rally past Mets
Ryan Zimmerman's short fly ball with one out in the ninth dropped into right field for a single, driving in two runs and giving the Washington Nationals a wild 8-7 victory over the New York Mets.
08/24/2011 21:47 Diamondbacks 4, Nationals 2
Daniel Hudson fell one out short of his first career shutout, and the Arizona Diamondbacks turned another casual arrival at the ballpark into a win, beating the Washington Nationals 4-2.
08/22/2011 21:44 Nats hand first-place Diamondbacks sixth loss in row
Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer, Ross Detwiler took a four-hitter into the seventh inning and the Washington Nationals beat Arizona 4-1 on Monday night to extend the Diamondbacks' losing streak to a season-high six games.
08/21/2011 18:36 Nationals close out wild win in 10th against Phillies
Ian Desmond hit a tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning, then Jonny Gomes was nicked by a pitch from Brad Lidge with the bases loaded in the 10th, giving the Washington Nationals an unlikely 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on a rainy Sunday.
Jonny Gomes hit 38 home runs and slugged .470 the previous two seasons with the Reds, but he saw a dropoff in production a year ago. He batted just .211 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 77 games for Cincinnati before being traded to the Nationals at the deadline. He would platoon in Washington and saw just 93 at-bats after the deal, hitting .204 with a .366 slugging percentage. The 31-year-old signed with the A's in the offseason and will vie for playing time at DH or in one of the corner outfield spots. While he has 20-homer potential, a move to the spacious Oakland Coliseum does not bode well for Gomes -- as he is a fly-ball hitter -- so he could be in for another rough campaign. Add to the fact that the A's are perpetually in a rebuilding mode, so owners should leave Gomes for AL-only formats on Draft Day. (Updated 2/1/12)
