Gomes plays role of hero : Oakland outfielder Jonny Gomes entered Saturday's game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter. He drew two walks before his at-bat in the top of the 12th inning. Gomes took reliever Joel Peralta deep, giving his team the 4-3 lead and eventual win. Gomes also got it done in the field as he made a diving catch on the warning track, which would have been an extra base hit. (Updated 05/05/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Gomes has five homers and eight RBI on the year for the A's. He's not an everyday starter, however, which cuts into his Fantasy value. Gomes is batting .239 on the year. He has bounced between left field and DH this season, but gets most of his starts versus lefties. Fantasy owners should continue to view him as an AL-only option. (Updated 05/05/2012).

Brandon McCarthy matched a career high with 10 strikeouts after missing his last start with a sore right shoulder, leading the Oakland Athletics past the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Saturday night.
Jonny Gomes hit 38 home runs and slugged .470 the previous two seasons with the Reds, but he saw a dropoff in production a year ago. He batted just .211 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 77 games for Cincinnati before being traded to the Nationals at the deadline. He would platoon in Washington and saw just 93 at-bats after the deal, hitting .204 with a .366 slugging percentage. The 31-year-old signed with the A's in the offseason and will vie for playing time at DH or in one of the corner outfield spots. While he has 20-homer potential, a move to the spacious Oakland Coliseum does not bode well for Gomes -- as he is a fly-ball hitter -- so he could be in for another rough campaign. Add to the fact that the A's are perpetually in a rebuilding mode, and owners should leave Gomes for AL-only formats on Draft Day. (Updated 2/13/12)
