| Manager feels Delmon Young is 'starting to come around' |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/8/13) Phillies outfielder Delmon Young was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday against the Giants for the first time in eight games since he came off the disabled list April 30. Unfortunately, Young has struggled since recording two hits in his first game, entering play Wednesday mired in a 1-for-17 slump.
"His hitting is starting to come around," Phillies manager Manuel said, per The Philadelphia Inquirer. "He's been getting some at-bats and stuff, but he's been in the minor leagues against young pitchers. He hasn't seen any command and the location like major-league pitchers have got. That makes a difference."

| Delmon Young not in outfield Wednesday |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (5/1/13) Phillies right fielder Delmon Young, who was originally scheduled to make his right-field debut Wednesday against the White Sox, is instead in the lineup as the team's designated hitter. Manager Charlie Manuel has decided to delay Young's defensive debut after he was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's game.
"It’s nothing crazy," Young told MLB.com. "I’ve got a big fat knot right there. Today was one of those days where if I had to play out there I could have played."
The Phillies are without the luxury of a DH starting Thursday when they return home to begin a series against the Marlins. Young is tentatively expected to start in right field in Thursday's game.

| Young makes splash in first game |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) Phillies outfielder Delmon Young was smart to return Tuesday, a night when everything was flying out of Progressive Field in Cleveland. Young went 2 for 3 in his first game back from ankle surgery, and he slugged a solo home run during a game in which nine home runs were hit.
It was a good return for Young, and hopefully a sign of things to come. The former top prospect is joining the National League for the first time, and it will be interesting to see how he responds. The Phillies will try to hide him at DH during interleague games to keep him healthy, but he projects to be the everyday right fielder before long.
In the past, Young has mostly contributed empty batting averages and middle-of-the-road power numbers for an outfielder, but the hope is that he can find himself on a one-year contract in a hitter's park. Given his pedigree, Young will always pique Fantasy owners' interest, no matter how far removed he is from his days as a prospect. At this point, he is just an NL-only Fantasy option, but he is worth keeping an eye on in deeper mixed leagues.

| Delmon Young could play right field Wednesday |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) Following his activation off the disabled list Tuesday, Phillies outfielder Delmon Young was inserted into the starting lineup as the team's DH and batting fifth against the Indians. However, he could make his debut in right field Wednesday, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Young had been on the disabled list all season recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

| What many observers probably remember best about Delmon Young's 2012 season with the Tigers was his arrest for aggravated harassment. Young certainly didn't provide many memorable moments on the field, as he turned in another season with a sub-.270 batting average and middling power. At age 27, there is still some hope that Young can rediscover the power that he has shown at times, but as he enters his peak years, owners may just have to accept that he is not going to be a 20-homer threat. It's more realistic to expect a rebound in his batting average, as Young routinely flirted with a .290 average or better earlier in his career. He needs to reverse last season's increases in strikeouts and popouts, but that's not a tall order for someone at this stage of his career. The Phillies will give Young a chance to crack their starting outfield, though the start of his season could be delayed by his recovery from offseason ankle surgery. He is worth considering in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats. (Updated 1/22/13) |
