Chad Qualls picks up first save vs. Angels
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/6/14) Astros relief pitcher Chad Qualls collected his first save of the season on Sunday against the Angels.

Qualls entered the game for Anthony Bass with one out in the ninth inning. He worked his way past one hit and struck out one before securing a 7-4 victory. Matt Albers and Qualls are the only two pitchers in the bullpen to have recorded saves this season for the Astros, as manager Bo Porter continues a closer-by-committee approach.
Three potential Astros closers pitch in non-save situation
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/2/14) Though Bo Porter has declared a closer-by-committee approach for the Astros to start the season, one might glean from the Tuesday box score that early favorite Josh Fields has a leg up on the job.

Kevin Chapman, Chad Qualls and Matt Albers all pitched in the victory over the Yankees in non-save situations. Fields was held back, which indicates he will be first in line to close out games. Albers pitched the ninth, but since it was the season opener for Houston, it cannot be argued that he was merely getting his work in.

Three players among closer options for Astros
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/1/14) Astros manager Bo Porter announced before the season opener against the Yankees that relievers Matt Albers, Josh Fields and Chad Qualls are all candidates to close Tuesday.
Astros intend to go with closer-by-committee approach
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/23/14) Astros manager Bo Porter said Sunday he expects to open the season with a closer-by-committee approach. He said the plans could change, but right now no one has taken hold of the job.

Before spring training began, Porter had identified Josh Fields, Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Jesse Crain as candidates for the closer's role. Unfortunately, Crain has been sidelined all spring due to injury.

Competition for Houston's closer's job remains wide open
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/17/14) Astros manager Bo Porter said Monday the competition for the closer's role is wide open between Josh Fields, Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Jesse Crain, according to the Houston Chronicle. However, Porter acknowledged Qualls experience as a closer carries some value.

Crain, however, might have a tough time competing for the job this spring since Porter said Monday there is still no timetable for when Crain will throw off a mound. The veteran reliever is still recovering from right biceps surgery in October.
