Astros closer Luke Gregerson (rest) not available on Wednesday
|by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer|
|(5/20/15) Astros manager A.J. Hinch confirmed that closer Luke Gregerson will not be available to pitch on Wednesday against the A's. Gregerson nearly cost the team a win on Tuesday when he gave up two runs in the ninth inning. He was pulled in favor of Pat Neshek who closed out the game and got the save.
Gregerson has appeared in three of the last four games for the Astros and has given up two runs in two of those performances.
Hinch indicated that Neshek, Chad Qualls, Tony Sipp and Josh Fields are all options to close if a save is needed on Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

|(5/15/15) Astros closer Chad Qualls pitched a perfect ninth inning to protect a two-run lead and earn his fourth save of the year, Thursday, against Toronto.
Qualls struck out one and threw nine strikes in 12 pitches. He reduced his ERA to 3.38.
Astros reliever Chad Qualls notches third save of 2015
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(5/9/15) Astros relief pitcher Chad Qualls worked himself out of trouble in the ninth inning in Houston's 6-5 win over the Angels on Saturday, earning his third save of the season.
Qualls struck out the first batter he faced in Carlos Perez before getting Matt Joyce to ground out. Then, after allowing an infield single, Qualls gave up a double to Kole Calhoun, driving in a run.
After intentionally walking Mike Trout, Qualls induced a ground out by Albert Pujols to end the game. Qualls moved his ERA to 3.97 with 15 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings of work.
With Luke Gregerson unavailable, Astros to turn to Chad Qualls
|by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer|
|(5/8/15) With Luke Gregerson placed on the family medical emergency list Friday, the Astros will turn to reliever Chad Qualls for their closer role, according to the Houston Chronical.
“Chad Qualls has the most experience,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “I’ve turned to him before when Luke’s been unavailable."
Qualls converted 19 of 25 save opportunities last year for the Astros.
“We’ll probably match up for the most part the next couple of games. Qualls with the most experience is likely to get the responsibility if the lineup is where I want it to be.” Hinch added.
Astros RP Chad Qualls closes out extra-inning win at Oakland
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(4/25/15) Astros reliever Chad Qualls earned his second save of the season during Friday's 5-4 win in 11 innings at Oakland, after closer Luke Gregerson and reliever Pat Neshek both struggled to close out the win.
Gregerson blew his first save of the season in the 10th inning, allowing Oakland to tie the game at 2. Neshek then came on to open the bottom of the 11th inning, but he was gone after allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds inning.
Astros manager A.J. Hinch brought on Tony Sipp to face Sam Fuld for the final out, but Sipp walked Fuld to put two runners on base. Hinch then called on Qualls, who retired Brett Lawrie on a fly out to deep center to end the rally.
|2014 summary: It had been four years since Chad Qualls recorded a save, but by mid-May, a lack of viable alternatives among the Astros' relief corps helped to launch him into the closer's role. The Astros didn't provide Qualls with many save opportunities -- 25, to be exact -- and with six blown saves, he was hardly efficient in converting them. Still, with a 3.33 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, Qualls had his best season since he recorded 24 saves for the Diamondbacks in 2009.|
Playing time status: With the offseason additions of Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek to the bullpen, the Astros now have some viable closing options beside Qualls. The incumbent should still be in the mix, however.
2015 outlook: As a reliever who relies more on ground balls and strong control than on strikeouts, he's not a typical closer, but he could have some success with that skill set. First he has to win the job, and even if he does, Qualls' appeal is limited to that of a third reliever in Rotisserie formats.
