|Astros not making Chad Qualls available pre-deadline |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(7/31/14) The Astros have informed inquiring teams that closer Chad Qualls is not available ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.
The Astros have received plenty of interest in the 35-year-old, who is under contract for just $3 million next season. He has a 3.19 ERA and 11 saves in 15 chances this season.
|Chad Qualls arrived to spring training in 2013 with just a chance to make the Marlins' opening-day roster, as he was in camp on a minor-league deal. A year later, not only does Qualls have a major-league contract after signing a two-year deal with the Astros, he's also in the mix to be Houston's closer. Qualls had quite the career revival in 2013 following a poor showing in 2012, when he posted a 5.33 ERA over 60 relief appearances. Qualls got off to a bit of a rough start last season, posting a 10.80 ERA through his first four appearances, but he would eventually be thrown into high-leverage situations by mid-June and emerged as a reliable setup man for Miami. Qualls would go 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 66 relief appearances. He also had 15 holds. Qualls was really exceptional over the final three months, posting a 1.76 ERA and 10 holds in his last 34 appearances. If Qualls emerges with the closer's job, then he's a viable low-end source for saves. If he works as a setup man, then he's just an option in leagues that reward for holds.
