Preseason Outlook

Aybar again got enough at-bats last year to show he might succeed as a starter, playing virtually every day once Carlos Pena broke his hand in early September. He hit a career-high 12 homers in 296 at-bats to go along with a decent walk rate. He's the kind of player you'll want to keep in mind during the season since you know he'll offer worthwhile numbers at a variety of positions if he gets the opportunity, but until he gets that opportunity, he should remain safely on waivers in mixed leagues. With Pena returning and Ben Zobrist firmly entrenched at second base, Aybar figures to begin the 2010 season as a reserve. (Updated 12/22/09)
