|'Highly unlikely' Joel Hanrahan returns this season |
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
(7/24/14) Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski acknowledged it's "highly unlikely" reliever Joel Hanrahan will pitch this season. "At this point I would say we're not counting on him at all. It does not sound encouraging," Dombrowski said.
Hanrahan suffered a setback this week in his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

Hanrhan has been sidelined since early May 2013.

(7/22/14) Tigers pitcher Joel Hanrahan is "still a longshot" to play this season, the Detroit News reports.
Hanrahan has been able to throw bullpen sessions over the last few weeks as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but he remains without a timetable to return to action and has yet to face live hitters.

|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(7/18/14) Tigers reliever Joel Hanrahan completed a 40-pitch mound session, as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery, head athletic trainer Kevin Rand told MLB.com on Friday. Hanrahan is still not ready to live face hitters and remains without a timetable moving forward.
"He's thrown bullpens the last two weeks. They've gotten incrementally a little bit better, but not to where [he can take the next step]," Rand said.
|Joel Hanrahan posted a 9.82 ERA and 2.18 WHIP over nine games in 2014, in a disastrous campaign that eventually led to Tommy John surgery in May. While the expectation is that Hanrahan could be back by June, there's been a recent trend with closers lately (Ryan Madson and Brian Wilson being just two examples) of setbacks and slower-than-expected rehabs. Hanrahan can still be an effective reliever, but he's a late-round gamble in deeper Roto leagues, at best -- he'll be coming back from major elbow surgery and there's no guarantee he can work his way into the saves mix, wherever he signs. Be cautious in drafting Hanrahan, and add at least a month to reports of his return. He's a solid keeper stash, but will probably bring little value back in 2014.
