| Mariners purchase LHP Woods' contract |
| (8/2/08) The Seattle Mariners purchased the contract of left-hander Jake Woods from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, filling a void in their bullpen created when the team traded Arthur Rhodes on Thursday. A spot on Seattle's 25-man roster was made available when Rhodes was traded to the Florida Marlins in exchange for minor league pitcher Gaby Hernandez. Rhodes was one of two left-handers in Seattle's bullpen. Woods was available for Saturday's game against Baltimore. |
| Balentien among M's spring cuts |
| (3/25/08) Outfielder Wladimir Balentien was among the Mariners spring cuts Monday. "He's a young kid learning the strike zone and we want him playing every day," manager John McLaren told MLB.com. "He needs to get ready for his Triple-A season down there." The 23-year-old Balentien batted .319 (15-for-47) with a team-leading three homrs and nine RBI. He was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, along with catcher Rob Johnson. Left-handed pitcher Jake Woods was reassigned to the minor league camp. |

| (3/7/08) The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that manager John McLaren said a handful of players are battling for George Sherrill's old setup man job in front of closer J.J. Putz. Eric O'Flaherty, Cesar Jimenez, Jake Woods, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Ryan Feierabend are among the competitors. "These guys are competing," McLaren said. "We've got some guys who know that position's open. You can see the intensity starting to pick up between those guys. I don't have a timeframe for myself. It's not something like the starting rotation where we felt we had to address. This is something that's going to work its way through as we go through spring training." |
