Preseason Outlook

Injuries again prevented Matsui from reaching 500 at-bats last year -- something he has yet to do in his six-year career -- but he finished with a career-high 476. Unfortunately, he didn't do much with them, his numbers falling across the board. All the progress he made in Colorado after his previous struggles with the Mets appeared to go out the window as he hit .250 with not nearly enough stolen bases to make up for all of his shortcomings. His .659 OPS -- one of the worst marks among all everyday players -- might convince the Astros to look elsewhere at second base, especially given Matsui's injury history. Now 34, he's clearly on the downside of his career, not that he was anything special during the upside. You might give him a look if you get desperate for steals, but he's more likely to hurt than help in the other categories. (Updated 12/22/09)
