|Indians sign David Aardsma to minor-league deal |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(1/23/14) The Indians announced Thursday they signed reliever David Aardsma to a minor-league contract, which includes an invitation to spring training. Aardsma pitched for the Mets in 2013, going 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 43 relief appearances.

(8/6/13) Forget about the two consecutive rough outings David Aardsma had while filling in for Mets closer Bobby Parnell (a blown save Aug. 2 and a loss Aug. 3). Aardsma had been pretty solid all season up to that point, and it's easy to forget that a) he's only 31 years old, and b) he was a near-elite closer for the Mariners just a few years ago.
In 2009 and 2010, Aardsma saved a combined 69 games, with a 2.90 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He also sported a 9.6 K/9. While the strikeouts are down this season (8.0 K/9), Aardsma has still been effective in middle relief for the Mets.
It's not a certainty that he will get all of the save opportunities (LaTroy Hawkins could find his way into the mix), but Aardsma was Terry Collins' first choice for the save on Friday when Parnell was out with the neck injury, and he should be back for the next opportunity.
For a team desperately in need of saves, Aardsma makes for a solid speculative add in most formats.

(8/3/13) With regular closer Bobby Parnell out with a neck injury, the Mets were forced to turn to reliever David Aardsma to try and close out Friday's game against the Royals.
Unfortunately, Aardsma would not prove up to the task, as he allowed the Royals to tie the game on two walks and a hit in two-thirds of an inning before he was removed. The Mets would go on to win, 4-2 in 11 innings.
