Erick Aybar nothing but a singles hitter in July
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(7/29/14) An inability to hit anything but singles has limited the production of Angels second baseman Erick Aybar recently.
Aybar has hit safely in 17 of his last 21 games, but 19 of his 22 hits during that stretch have been singles. He has no triples or home runs in that period. He has just five runs scored and six RBI since July 6. Aybar owns a decent .281/.317/.403 stat line on the season. His slugging percentage has fallen 30 points in July, but he has been productive overall in 2014 with 50 runs scored and 51 RBI.
Erick Aybar returns as expected Tuesday

|(7/22/14) As expected, Erick Aybar is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Orioles, after recovering from a groin strain.
Aybar missed three games in a row as a result of the injury, but was available off the bench Monday and was expected to return Tuesday. He has a 10-game hitting streak active heading into Thursday's action.
Erick Aybar expects to return to lineup Tuesday

|(7/21/14) Angels shortstop Erick Aybar was out of the starting lineup for the third straight day Monday, but he feels good and is available to play in Monday's game if needed, MLB.com reports.
Aybar is expected to return to the starting lineup Tuesday after dealing with a sore right groin over the past few days. He owns a 10-game hitting streak that has boosted his line to .283/.320/.409 in 364 at-bats.
|2014 summary: Though at first glance, Erick Aybar's sixth-best finish among shortstops in Head-to-Head points league seems like a fluke -- a byproduct of a career-high 68 RBI, with 50 of them coming in the first half -- the simple truth is that on a per-game basis, he wasn't any better than in 2013 and 2012. And though he isn't quite as productive in Rotisserie leagues since a high doubles rate and low strikeout rate are intrinsic to his value, he's been a top-12 shortstop two of the last three years in that format as well.|
Playing time status: More than his actual production, a career-high 156 games with the Angels were responsible for Aybar's high ranking last year. He's not exactly an injury risk, having played no fewer than 137 games in any of the last six seasons, but shortstop being as physical as it is, a DL stint for him somewhere along the line is to be expected.
2015 outlook: Though he has a 30-steal season in his past, these days Aybar doesn't do any one thing particularly well, lumping him with Alcides Escobar and Asdrubal Cabrera as just another boring fallback option at the position. But especially in points leagues, he's one of the better choices of that group. You shouldn't be ashamed to use a late-round pick on him.
