Angels' Scioscia: Aybar's OBP won't be off the charts as leadoff man
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(5/21/15) Angels manager Mike Scioscia is hoping that shortstop Erick Aybar will add a spark to the offense from the leadoff spot, per the Los Angeles Times.
Aybar spent seven games at the top of the order earlier in the season before taking over the top spot for the foreseeable future on Monday. He is hitting .286 (4 for 14) in his first three games back as the leadoff man, and .387 (24 for 62) with four RBI and a .406 on-base percentage over his last 16 games played.
"I don't think you ever ask a player to do something he's either not comfortable with or not suited for," Scioscia said. "With Erick, although he's not going to see as many pitches as a traditional leadoff guy, he's athletic, he's going to get in scoring position a lot.
"His on-base is not going to be off the charts, but it's not going to be awful, either. He's going to get on base enough, get in scoring position enough to where he can still be effective as a table-setter."
Angels SS Erick Aybar on aches and pains: 'It's bad'
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/20/15) Just call him Aching Erick. Angels shortstop Erick Aybar is having problems with his lower back and hamstrings.
"It's bad," he told MLB.com.
It has not shown at the plate. Aybar has hit in 10 straight games and 14 of his last 15. His average has catapulted during that stretch from .200 to .279, its highest point since April 10.
Angels bat Erick Aybar leadoff, Kole Calhoun cleanup Monday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(5/18/15) The Angels have flipped players in two prominent lineup spots for Monday's matchup with the Blue Jays, as shortstop Erick Aybar will lead off while right fielder Kole Calhoun bats cleanup.
Aybar will lead off for the ninth time this season. He's spent most of the year batting fifth or lower, but he was the team's cleanup hitter on Saturday for the first time this season and reprised the role Sunday.
"What Erick doesn't bring in patience, working counts, he brings in just athleticism and still gets on base at a rate which hopefully will set the table for Mike (Trout) and Albert (Pujols) moving forward," manager Mike Scioscia said, per MLB.com. "And also, we have Johnny Giavotella pushed back to ninth, to try to connect him with Mike. Hopefully there will be some table-setting there that's happening, and we'll get to the big guys in our lineup. "
Calhoun has made 28 starts in the leadoff spot, but he did bat cleanup five times in a row starting on April 30, with Aybar serving as the leadoff man in all five games. The team went 1-4 during that stretch, losing four straight games before going back to Calhoun at the leadoff spot.
"As much as we really like Kole in the leadoff spot, and in front of Mike, I think what we're presented with right now just makes the most sense to go with it this way," Scioscia said. "Guys have had a lot of time to get into their game and aren't there yet, so we need to start to take a little pressure off our pitching staff."
The Angels are road favorites (-123) in Toronto on Monday, per VegasInsider.com.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia may move up Erick Aybar to leadoff
|by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer|
|(5/15/15) Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he's thinking about moving up shortstop Erick Aybar in the lineup to leadoff while dropping down right fielder Kole Calhoun towards the middle, reports the Orange County Register.|
Aybar, who's primarily hit fifth or sixth this season, has been on a recent tear, batting .417 (15 for 36) over his last 10 games.
Calhoun has hit leadoff in 25 of the Angels' 34 games this season, hitting .314 with three homers and 18 RBI.
Angels' Erick Aybar starting to find success in May
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(5/11/15) Angels shortstop Erick Aybar is on pace to produce career-worst offensive numbers but has started to pick things up at the plate, going 10 for 29 with three runs and three RBI in his last eight games.
Aybar's OPS dipped below .500 at several points over the first month of the season and he has yet to find much power at all, managing just two doubles and no home runs in 119 at-bats. He's hit between five and 10 home runs and recorded double-digit steals in each season since 2009 but has none of either in 2015.
Aybar has a pair of home games against the Rockies on tap this week before a three-game series in Baltimore.
|2014 summary: Though at first glance, Erick Aybar's sixth-best finish among shortstops in Head-to-Head points league seems like a fluke -- a byproduct of a career-high 68 RBI, with 50 of them coming in the first half -- the simple truth is that on a per-game basis, he wasn't any better than in 2013 and 2012. And though he isn't quite as productive in Rotisserie leagues since a high doubles rate and low strikeout rate are intrinsic to his value, he's been a top-12 shortstop two of the last three years in that format as well.|
Playing time status: More than his actual production, a career-high 156 games with the Angels were responsible for Aybar's high ranking last year. He's not exactly an injury risk, having played no fewer than 137 games in any of the last six seasons, but shortstop being as physical as it is, a DL stint for him somewhere along the line is to be expected.
2015 outlook: Though he has a 30-steal season in his past, these days Aybar doesn't do any one thing particularly well, lumping him with Alcides Escobar and Asdrubal Cabrera as just another boring fallback option at the position. But especially in points leagues, he's one of the better choices of that group. You shouldn't be ashamed to use a late-round pick on him.
