Preseason Outlook

Callaspo didn't open the season as a starter, but injuries to Mike Aviles and Alex Gordon quickly made him one. He showed the Royals should have given him one sooner, hitting 11 home runs and 41 doubles in a demonstration of extra-base power he never had in the minors. That's what happens when a player hits his prime. He especially destroyed left-handers, hitting .361 with a .913 OPS against them. He provided the Royals with one of their few sources of consistent offense, so you have to think he'll at least have a split role with Chris Getz, acquired in the Mark Teahen trade this offseason. Even if he opens the season in some kind of semi-platoon, his 1-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio suggests his .300 batting average is legitimate. The cream will rise to the top. Callaspo is a late-rounder and might go undrafted in some leagues, but he'll play a role in most before season's end. (Updated 12/22/09)
