Braves to continue platoon approach at third base
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(5/1/15) Though Chris Johnson is out for three-to-six weeks following a hand injury, the Braves aren't planning to change up their strategy at third base, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
For the season, manager Fredi Gonzalez has been rotating Johnson and Alberto Callaspo based on matchups on a game-to-game basis. With Johnson out, Gonzalez said he's not going to make Callaspo the lone third baseman.
The Braves figure to use Phil Gosselin in the third base mix, as well as some potential minor-league additions, Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez is high on Gosselin's potential as a major-leaguer.
“I think he’s a major league player,” Gonzalez said. “He can play multiple positions, he can pinch hit. He’s a very valuable piece in the National League team. He can play third, second, short. You can even run him in the outfield like we did in spring training.”
Braves' Alberto Callaspo slugs pinch-hit home run Sunday

|(4/26/15) Braves infielder Alberto Callaspo hit a solo home run in a pinch-hit appearance Sunday in his team's 5-4 loss to the Phillies.
On the same day that manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated that Jace Peterson would serve as the team's primary second baseman, Callaspo, who has also seen plenty of time at third base, swatted a pinch-hit home run off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. It was the first homer of the year for Callaspo, who has hit .261/.314/.348 with four RBI in 46 at-bats.
Braves to use Jace Peterson as primary second baseman

|(4/26/15) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated Sunday that he's returning to his initial plan to use infielder Jace Peterson as his primary second baseman, MLB.com reports.
Peterson has shared time at second base with Alberto Callaspo, who has also made eight starts at third base, and Phil Gosselin, leading to Peterson seeing just 11 of a possible 17 starts at the position. He's seen action all over the starting lineup, batting first or second in four of the team's first five games but spending most of his time batting seventh or eighth as of late.
Peterson has hit just .171/.239/.220 in 41 at-bats. He's starting at second base and batting sixth in Sunday's matchup with the Phillies, in which the Braves are underdogs (+100).
Braves start Chris Johnson at third over Alberto Callaspo

|(4/21/15) Braves third baseman Chris Johnson will start Tuesday's game against the Mets, over Alberto Callaspo. Johnson will hit fifth in the order.
With Tuesday's game, Johnson and Callaspo each have made six starts at third base this season. Neither player has started more than two games in a row. Johnson is hitting .320 with three RBI.
The Braves are +135 underdogs at the Mets.
Braves hitting better, but don't credit top of the lineup
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/17/15) The Braves have launched the 2015 season better offensively than they did last year. But don't credit the top of the lineup.
The team has yet to score two or fewer runs in a game. They did so four times and were blanked twice in their first seven games of 2014. Yet the first two hitters in the lineup are struggling mightily.
Braves leadoff hitters are 8-for-37 (.216) with a .275 on-base percentage. But they've been raking compared to those hitting behind them. The second spot, which has been manned by Jace Peterson, Alberto Callaspo, Phil Gosselin and Andrelton Simmons, has produced a .114 average with no extra-base hits, .162 OBP and .114 slugging percentage.
