Preseason Outlook

The 2009 season started out well enough for Jones, showing everyone why the Orioles made him such a priority in the Erik Bedard trade. He hit .344 with 11 home runs over the first two months, even earning a trip to the All-Star game. But it was all downhill from there. He hit only .199 with eight home runs over the next three months and never got a chance to redeem himself, missing all of September with a sprained left ankle. Still, the progress he made at age 24 shows just what kind of potential he has. One of these years, perhaps even this year, he figures to take a huge step forward, and when that happens, some lucky (insightful?) Fantasy owner will laugh all the way to a championship. You shouldn't expect Jones to hit .300 -- not with a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio -- but a leap to 30 homers this year wouldn't be out of the question. He's a bit of a boom-or-bust type in the early-to-middle rounds, but taking those gambles often leads to Fantasy championships. (Updated 1/18/10)
