Preseason Outlook

In stretches, Maholm looks like a solid major league starter, which says a lot considering he pitches for the lowly Pirates. The fact he is just one game under .500 the past two seasons combined is a testament to that. Even if the control-and-command lefty is hittable from time to time, he doesn't hurt himself with walks and can be a candidate to reach 200-plus innings again. Maholm won't be worth drafting in most mixed leagues, especially with the Pirates, but he could prove to be a solid late-round flier in NL-only formats. (Updated 1/13/10)
