Preseason Outlook

Shoppach, who burst onto the scene with 21 home runs as a replacement for Victor Martinez in 2008, wasn't nearly as impressive last year. He had his opportunities too, getting semi-regular at-bats as Martinez spent much of his time at first base and designated hitter. But he hit so poorly that even after the Indians traded Martinez to the Red Sox, they still didn't trust Shoppach as their everyday catcher, instead giving starts to Lou Marson, Wyatt Toregas and Chris Gimenez. The Rays still saw potential with Shoppach, acquiring him from the Indians in the offseason, but he still might have to split at-bats with Dioner Navarro. His power potential makes him worth a late-round pick in leagues that require two catchers, but his high strikeout rate could once again destroy his batting average, forcing the Rays to take him out of the starting lineup.
