Kendrick, who scouts once considered one of the best prospects in baseball because of his contact hitting in the minors, got off to such a poor start in 2009 that the Angels sent him to the minor leagues in mid-June. Whether they did it to inspire him or give him hands-on instruction, the maneuver seemed to work. Kendrick returned July 4 and hit .351 the rest of the way, sixth among all players with at least 150 at-bats during that stretch. He played mostly against left-handers, platooning with Maicer Izturis, but the Angels caught on to his hot hitting after a while and began to give him more regular at-bats at the end of the season. He doubled his previous career high with 10 home runs, showing he has the potential to hit for power as he enters his prime, and his contact hitting in the second half looked the way it did when he won batting titles in the minors. His poor plate discipline makes him always a gamble in Fantasy, but his upside makes him worth the investment in the middle to late rounds. (Updated 12/22/09)
