| Howie Kendrick not quite this good |
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer (5/15/13) Howie Kendrick's sixth home run of the season Tuesday against the Royals was justification enough for me to move him up my rankings. But the Angels second baseman is still only 15th at the weak second base position. Quite simply, I don't think he's this much of a home run hitter.
Granted, he's not the guy who hit only eight last year either, but even the 18 he piled up in 2011 might be beyond his reach. He just doesn't hit the ball in the air enough to make it possible. To achieve the six he's had so far, he's needed a home run-to-flyball rate of 21.4 percent, by far the highest of his career. Of the seven players with a lower fly ball percentage than Kendrick's 22.6, most are slap-hitting speedsters like Ben Revere, Everth Cabrera, Elvis Andrus and Jose Altuve. And yet that's nothing new for Kendrick, whose career fly ball rate is only 26.6 percent.
Considering he's only the 12th-highest scoring second baseman in Head-to-Head leagues to date, he won't be all that special when the home runs slow down.

| Howie Kendrick slugs sixth home run |
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick hit his sixth home run Tuesday against Kansas City.
Kendrick finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and the RBI. At this point, Kendrick is having the typical Kendrick year -- his .288/.321/.438 season line is nearly indistinguishable from his .291/.328/.428 career line.

Kendrick's blast, a solo home run, was his fifth of the year. He also scored two runs and has his batting line up to .299/.328/.457.

White Sox rally past Angels for 3rd road win in row
Jeff Keppinger walked with the bases loaded to drive in the go-ahead run -- his first base on balls in 141 plate appearances this season - and the Chicago White Sox rallied with three runs in the eighth to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 on Thursday night for their season-high third straight road win.

| Howard Kendrick looked like he was finally breaking out in 2011, when he nearly doubled his previous career high with 18 home runs. But 2012 quickly put that to rest. Kendrick's eight homers were his fewest in four years, and it's not like he made any strides in other areas. Now that he's seven years into his major-league career, you can safely assume he won't develop into the batting title contender his minor-league numbers made him out to be. He hasn't even hit .290 since 2009. Given his poor batting eye, that's a bigger issue than you'd think. Among the 115 batters with at least 500 at-bats last season, Kendrick ranked 104th with 29 walks. Factor in his limited base-stealing potential, and he doesn't have anything to offer Fantasy owners if he's not hitting homers. And again, those 18 in 2011 were, to this point in his career, an aberration. Now, he did dramatically improve his doubles rate in the second half, giving him a higher slugging percentage than in the first half, which offers some assurance that he'll have better seasons than the one he just had. But if a best-case scenario for him is a repeat of those 18 homers, Kendrick deserves no more than a late-round pick in mixed leagues. (Updated 12/3/12) |
