Mattingly on Howie Kendrick: We're looking for consistent at-bats
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(3/25/15) Dodgers second baseman Howie Kendrick is quickly adjusting to life with his new club, and has spent much of his spring training bonding time with Jimmy Rollins, who is also new to the club, per the Los Angeles Times.
"I think it's a little overdone. But we like them to be comfortable with each other, that's for sure," manager Don Mattingly said about the relationship between the two.
"They've played enough that they get that communication out of the way pretty early. Guys do so much work together nowadays it gets comfortable pretty quick."
Kendrick was acquired in a trade that sent him from the Angels to the Dodgers in exchange for Andrew Heaney. Kendrick, 31, hit .293/.347/.397 over 617 at-bats last year. He has a .292/.332/.424 career slash line.
"I just know he can hit," Mattingly said of Kendrick. "Howie consistently gets good at-bats. And that's really what we're looking for."
Dodgers pick up Howie Kendrick from Angels
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(12/11/14) The Dodgers have traded pitcher Andrew Heaney to the Angels for second baseman Howie Kendrick, confirms CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Ken Gurnick of MLB.com was the first to report Kendrick would be going to the Dodgers.
The Dodgers acquired Heaney earlier on Wednesday in a six player deal with Miami. Once that trade was processed, the team dealt the 23-year-old pitcher to the Angels for Kendrick. Kendrick, 31, hit .293/.347/.397 over 617 at-bats last year. Kendrick is owed just under $10 million, and is entering the final year of his contract.
Heaney appeared in seven games for the Marlins last year, including five starts. He posted a 5.83 ERA over 29 1/3 innings. He was considered a top-20 prospect entering last season, according to MLB.com.
Report: Angels want to keep Kendrick
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(11/14/14) Despite various trade rumors, the Angels are intent on keeping second baseman Howie Kendrick for the 2015 season, according to the Orange County Register.
Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto has told various reporters he would prefer not to trade Kendrick. The Blue Jays and Yankees are among the teams that have expressed interest in Kendrick.
Angels still fielding trade inquiries on Kendrick, Freese
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(11/13/14) The Angels aren't in a rush to trade second baseman Howie Kendrick or third baseman David Freese, but for the right deal that includes a pitcher, the team would consider a trade, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.
The Yankees and Blue Jays are among the teams that have called about Kendrick, who is receiving more interest than Freese. However, it is believed the Angels are more likely to keep Kendrick than trade him.
Report: Angels put 2B Kendrick, 3B Freese on trading block
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(10/31/14) The Angels are preparing to trade either second baseman Howie Kendrick or third baseman David Freese in an attempt to bolster their starting rotation or acquire a left-hander reliever, according to Fox Sports.
Both are 31 years old. Kendrick is coming off a strong season in which he tied a career-high with 75 RBI and added 85 runs scored. Freese struggled before a strong September and finished the year with a stat line of .260/.321/.383.
|2014 summary: Though he hit about 50 percent fewer homers in about 30 percent more at-bats, Howie Kendrick managed to be even more productive in Fantasy last year than in 2013, ranking eighth among second basemen in Head-to-Head points leagues and seventh in Rotisserie. An improved supporting cast had something to do with it -- Kendrick's 75 RBI equaled a career high, and his 85 runs scored were just one off -- but for the most part, the 31-year-old continued to do what he's always done, once again proving that you don't need to have 20 or even 15 home runs or stolen bases to make a real impact in Fantasy.|
Playing time status: The hyperextended knee that cost Kendrick six weeks in 2013 didn't come up last year and is the only real blemish for him over the last five years. As with most chronic overachievers in Fantasy, his health is critical to his value.
2015 outlook: Though no one thing he does ever really stands out, Kendrick always seems to rank high among second baseman, and that shouldn't change with his move to the Dodgers. He's reliably competent, which counts for something over the course of a 162-game season, but of course, in shorter stretches, you'll find plenty of second basemen better than him. It's why he's still no more than a late-rounder in mixed leagues, though one sure to be drafted in formats that require a third middle infielder.
