| Howie Kendrick becomes extremely tough out |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/16/13) Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick was a perfect 3 for 3 Saturday against the Yankees, extending his multi-hit streak to four games. Kendrick has collected nine multi-hit games in June.
He's batting .533 (24 for 45) with one home run, three doubles, four walks, four runs and six RBI in his last 12 games. Since May 14, Kendrick is batting .418 (46 for 110), raising his batting average from .275 to .336. He is slugging .591 in that span.
"It's really all see the ball and hit it, that's all I can tell you," Kendrick said, per the Los Angeles Daily News. "Right now we're getting a lot of production from a lot of guys and we're getting opportunities to make big hits."

| Howie Kendrick enjoying hot streak |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/9/13) Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick had a pair multi-hit games during Saturday's doubleheader against the Red Sox to extend his hitting streak to six games. Kendrick has been on a roll for much longer than six games, batting .416 (37 for 89) with a .596 slugging percentage in his last 24 games.
His recent surge has given manager Mike Scioscia enough confidence to move Kendrick into the fifth spot in the lineup, and bump up struggling outfielder Josh Hamilton to the second spot in the lineup between Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.
"I just play, man, to be honest with you," Kendrick said, per MLB.com. "Just as easy as they can be really good, they can be on the other side, too. You enjoy it while you're doing it and hope it continues. Honestly, I've been trying to go out and just keep playing hard, trying to help the team win."

| Howard Kendrick looked like he was finally breaking out in 2011, when he nearly doubled his previous career high with 18 home runs. But 2012 quickly put that to rest. Kendrick's eight homers were his fewest in four years, and it's not like he made any strides in other areas. Now that he's seven years into his major-league career, you can safely assume he won't develop into the batting title contender his minor-league numbers made him out to be. He hasn't even hit .290 since 2009. Given his poor batting eye, that's a bigger issue than you'd think. Among the 115 batters with at least 500 at-bats last season, Kendrick ranked 104th with 29 walks. Factor in his limited base-stealing potential, and he doesn't have anything to offer Fantasy owners if he's not hitting homers. And again, those 18 in 2011 were, to this point in his career, an aberration. Now, he did dramatically improve his doubles rate in the second half, giving him a higher slugging percentage than in the first half, which offers some assurance that he'll have better seasons than the one he just had. But if a best-case scenario for him is a repeat of those 18 homers, Kendrick deserves no more than a late-round pick in mixed leagues. (Updated 12/3/12) |
