Preseason Outlook

When a player sets career highs in home runs and stolen bases, becoming only the third at his position to join the 30-30 club, you normally wouldn't call his season a disappointment. But in Kinsler's case, you have to. He broke out as one of the elite players in Fantasy two years ago, hitting .319 with all the same power and speed before shutting down early because of a sports hernia, so his .253 batting average was a definite step backward, especially since he hit only .239 after April. In fact, you could argue he only set career highs because he managed to stay healthy, which is still a stretch considering he played only 144 games. No doubt, his combination of power and speed at a historically weak position makes him a serious asset in Fantasy, but you don't know exactly what you'll get with him. If he plays like he did in 2008, he's a potential first-rounder. Otherwise, he's an excellent player with notable shortcomings. He's still a second baseman to consider in the early rounds, but he's now one of several behind Chase Utley instead of the clear-cut favorite. (Updated 12/22/09)
