| Padres reinstate Carlos Quentin from paternity list |

(6:05 pm ET) The Padres have officially reinstated outfielder Carlos Quentin from the paternity list before Saturday's game against the Nationals. But Quentin was not in the starting lineup.
Quentin has missed the last three games to attend the birth of his child. He has reached base in each of his past five games, hitting .211 with four walks, two home runs and four RBI during that stretch.

(5/17/13) Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, who was placed on the paternity leave list Friday, is expected to return in time for Saturday's game against the Nationals.
Quentin has reached base in each of his last five games. He is hitting .211 with four walks, two home runs and four RBI over that span. He is hitting just .181 with four home runs in 83 at-bats before leaving the team for the birth of his child.

(5/17/13) The Padres announced Friday that outfielder Carlos Quentin has been placed on the paternity leave list. The team purchased the contract of Tim Stauffer from Triple-A Tucson to replace Quentin.
The maximum amount of time a player can be on the paternity list is three games, so Quentin should be back soon. He is hitting just .181 with four home runs on the season.

Quentin reached base in each of his last five games. He is hitting .211 with four walks, two home runs and four RBI over that span. His status for Friday's game against the Nationals is up in the air.

(5/14/13) Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin hit his fourth home run in Tuesday's series opener against the Orioles. He took starter Chris Tillman deep for a solo shot in his first at-bat and finished 1 for 4 in a 3-2 win.
Quentin is 3 for 32 (.094) in May with two homers and three RBI.

| The good news for Carlos Quentin is that the move from hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field to hitter-friendly PETCO Park didn't slow him down one iota in 2012 (and now that the fences are coming in at PETCO, it's not such a big deal anyway). The bad news is he was unable to take the field for more than 86 games, missing two months at the beginning of the season because of knee surgery and a month at the end because of continued irritation in that same knee. He went under the knife again this offseason in an attempt to correct the problem once and for all, but seeing as he's never played more than 131 games in a season, you should pretty much assume Quentin will miss some time with one issue or another. As for his performance, again, the PETCO effect was negligible with him. One interesting development, though, was the sudden increase in walks. Despite a modest .261 batting average, he had a .374 on-base percentage, his highest since his near-MVP season in 2008. If he has matured to the point that walks are a regular part of his arsenal, he'll be able to avoid the lengthy slumps that move him in and out of mixed-league lineups even when healthy. Given the injury risk, though, you probably still shouldn't draft Quentin as more than a fourth outfielder in those formats. (Updated 12/4/12) |
