Preseason Outlook

Aviles, a Fantasy darling when he came out of nowhere to hit .325 with 10 home runs as a rookie in 2008, looked like a completely different player last year. He hit .183, fighting through a forearm injury for two months before shutting down in late May and ultimately opting for Tommy John surgery. Position players typically return from that procedure faster than pitchers do, so you can expect to see Aviles in spring training. Unfortunately, you might not see him starting. The Royals acquired Yuniesky Betancourt to play shortstop and seem to have found a keeper in Alberto Callaspo. Plus, you have to remember Aviles really did come out of nowhere. Manager Trey Hillman insists the injury had everything to do with his struggles, but until he recovers, nobody can say for sure. Aviles has the potential for better numbers than both Betancourt and Callaspo, but he's clearly too risky for more than a late-round pick. (Updated 1/5/10)
